Battle of Hastings        Battle of Agincourt

Alexander the Great 334-323BC

When Alexander led his combined Macedonian and Greek army across the Dardanelles and into Asia he began the greatest career of military conquest in world history. In eleven short years he overcame the might of the Persian Empire and campaigned across the face of most of the known world. John Warry, an expert on the warfare of the Classical world, describes in great detail the course of this epic achievement.

Hastings 1066

The most famous battle in English history, Hastings was the culmination of one of the medieval world's most daring military expeditions - and a truly decisive battle. It marked the end of Anglo-Saxon England, winning the land hungry Normans a new kingdom, and ensuring that Britain's destiny lay in Western Europe rather than with Scandinavia. The author, Chris Gravett, of the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London, has written several titles in the Osprey Men-at -arms series.

Agincourt 1415

Back

Immortalized by Shakespeare, Agincourt is an epic of courage and hard fighting. Brought to bay after the long siege of Harfleur, Henry V's army was soaked, starving and riddled with disease, and facing a French army at odds of more than 3 to 1. How the English beat off their attackers and slaughtered the flower of French nobility is vividly described in this volume. Matthew Bennett is a lecturer at the RMA Sandhurst and a specialist in medieval military history.

Sergeant Gannon assisting an officers orderly to bring his wounded master under very heavy fire.

Sergeant Gannon assisting an officers orderly to bring his wounded master under very heavy fire. As the 2nd Munsters fell back from the attack on the enemys trenches, near the Rue du Bois on Sunday May 9th 1915, many fell or wounded, or else wandered helplessly about under the enemys appalling fire. Seeing an officers orderly trying to carry his wounded master, Gannon got out of the trench to go to his assistance. The officer was too heavy to carry, and they were therefore obliged to drag him along the ground. But he was brought safely to the trench under a storm of shrapnel and machine gun and rifle bullets. Gannon had been out twice before, and he went out again to help the wounded. For his most gallant conduct he was rewarded with the D.C.M. and the Order of St George (third Class) was bestowed on him by the Czar of Russia.
