Colenso 1899

The Boer War in Natal

General Buller's campaign in Natal in 1899, and the defeats at Colenso and Spioenkop, mark a turning point in British military history. The army that had won and policed a great empire was humbled by a militia composed of South African frontier farmers - the Boers. Ian Knight sets the battles in context, and explains the failure of a professional army, skilled in the fighting techniques of the nineteenth century, when faced with an enemy whose weapons and tactics foreshadowed the warfare of the twentieth.

Majuba 1881,  The Hill of Destiny by Ian Castle

In 1881 the tension between Britain and the Boer farmers of Southern Africa that had existed for 75 years boiled over into open conflict. The British entered the war full of confidence, yet in a few short weeks they had suffered three separate reverses before enduring their final humiliating defeat on the isolated summit of Majuba. George Colley's force were swept off their 'unassailable' position and into headlong retreat. It was a defeat that sent shock waves reverberating around the Empire.

54(F) Squadron Farewell by Michael Rondot (GS)

54(F) Squadron Farewell by Michael Rondot (GS) A famous fighter squadron with a glorious history, No.54(F) Squadron began its distinguished career in the fierce fighting on the Western Front during World War I. In 1940, flying Spitfires, it was the highest scoring RAF fighter squadron in the Battle of Britain and went on to become one of the few squadrons to fly Spitfires operationally during the whole of World War II. Always a front line squadron, No.54(F) Squadron flew Tempests, Vampires, Meterors and Hunters before graduating from F4 Phantoms to Jaguars in 1974. Commanded by Wg Cdr Terry Carkton, it became the first RAF Jaguar Squadron at Coltishall, so continuing its tradition of flying only fighter/ground attack aircraft during its distinguished history.
